The Best Tracks for this First Wednesday of April breezes in with today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day, all fresh and ready for your listening pleasure. It starts off with a lovely lush number from the duo Dean & Britta (pictured above). Next up is a haunting “Haunted Jukebox” from Saint Etienne. An older Track from Paul Weller joins in just in time for Weller Wednesday, with “No Tears to Cry”. One of my Favorites from Air (see other Best Air Tracks here), recorded, and featured in the Sofia Coppola’s film, The Virgin Suicides. The Best Songs for Wednesday Top 5 comes to an end with a addictive cover from the wonderful Nouvelle Vague, this time taking on a lesser known Depeche Mode Song, one of my Favorites – “In a Manner of Speaking”.
You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify or YouTube link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I add each five songs shared to both playlists each day, so they expand as the week unfolds.
My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “Night Nurse” :: Dean & Britta
“Sleep together the Milky Way.
Sleep forever and a day.”
A new Music discovery. This Song was part of a Spotify Discover Playlist I was spinning yesterday. At first glance at the Song title I thought of the Marvel character Night Nurse, most recently seen on the Netflix Marvel Series Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Pressing play I discovered a very lush and lovely track that fits in perfectly with the Saint Etienne Track that follows. I’ll be looking further into Dean & Britta’s Music in the future.
2. “Haunted Jukebox” :: Saint Etienne
“And, I know that it’s been too long,
but the spirits in the air.
It’s like the the tunes are everywhere.
I want to go.
I can’t escape.
I’m sure you know.”
Jukeboxes are one of my Favorite things. I once talked about taking a cross-country road trip, stopping in small towns and big cities both, and discovering jukeboxes across the States, noting the different music selections, maybe taking pictures along the way, keeping track of what I played. Maybe someday I will do it.
3. “No Tears to Cry” :: Paul Weller
“If you don’t want to watch,
watch me slide,
turn around here inside.”
Weller Wednesday! Stay tuned for more Weller today.
4. “Playground Love” :: Air, featuring Gordon Tracks
“Love is all,
all my soul.
You’re my playground love.”
Sigh. Such a beautiful song. Sofia Coppola always includes such perfect Music into her films. This one was featured in her film, The Virgin Suicides (see below). The Songs she uses, they almost become characters themselves. And, that meet-up of Song and Image is how I see/feel/experience Music. Its almost like dreaming.
5. “In a Manner of Speaking” :: Nouvelle Vague
“The way that I feel about you,
is beyond words.”
A delightful cover of one of my Favorite Depeche Mode songs. I love the melancholic beauty this version conveys. Romantic, wistful, beautiful.
So there we have it, the Best Songs for this First April Wednesday. These are My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day for Wednesday – what are yours?
