Listen here on Spotify

The Best Music of Today, the last Thursday of March, My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day starts with a brand new Paul Weller single from his upcoming Album (missed Weller Wednesday by one day, but still a welcome surprise).  Next up is my Favorite Song from Blur’s Think Tank Album, “Out of Time”. Up next is another Favorite of mine, “This is the Day” from The The, a Song I love to hear in the early morning. A track from Laura Marling’s newest Album, the last track, my Favorite track, comes in at number . And it all wraps up for the day with a Yaz song that I was reminded of while watching a documentary last night on the band, from their Quintessential Album, Upstairs At Eric’s.

You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I add each five songs shared to the playlist each day, so the playlist evolves as the week does.

My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:

1. “Long Long Road” :: Paul Weller

To the strangers passing by,
to the castles in my eyes,
and the busy streets and markets,
when I look,
I look for you
.”

One of the two Paul Weller New tracks released today. This one has such a Seventies soul/Seventies songwriter feel to it. And oh my stars, those strings. Weller is stellar at string arrangements, that’s for sure. This is a beautiful love song, a grown-up’s love song, the kind sung with open eyes and understanding.

2. “Out of Time” :: Blur

Where’s the love song
to set us free?
Too many people down,
everything turning the wrong way around.
And, I don’t know what love will be,
but if we start dreaming now,
lord knows we’ll never leave the clouds
.”

On the other side of love songs, this one feels younger, youthful, new and maybe a bit naive. Still, it is also a beautiful love song. My Favorite from Blur’s Think Tank Album. I love the guitar in it.

3. “This is the Day” :: The The

“Well, you didn’t wake up this morning ’cause you didn’t go to bed,
you were watching the whites of your eyes turn red.”

This song always feels so hopeful to me, but when you really listen some of it is full of the weight of insomnia, of regret, of not being able to let things go enough to rest, and relax. Though, the chorus, that still feels like hope. Perhaps this is the chance of ending a sleepless routine, a chance to start over? No matter the meanings, I still feel hopeful when I hear this song, especially in the early mornings.

4. “Nothing, Not Nearly” :: Laura Marling

The only thing I learnt in a year,
where I didn’t smile once,
not really,
nothing matters more than love, no,
nothing, no, not nothing no, not nearly
.”

The Last track on the latest Laura Marling Album. The First track I heard from the Album. My Favorite track from the Album, and definitely in My Top 5 of Laura Marling songs (will have to do a Top 5 of her music soon).

5. “In My Room” :: Yaz

“I stand alone and watch the clock,
I only wait for it to stop.
And, in the room locked up inside me,
the cutout magazines remind me,
I sit and wait alone in my room.”

Lyrically, this Song is similar in some ways to the The The one above. I get the sense of sleepless nights, loneliness, perhaps regrets. Sonically this Song is just amazing. Just one more reason why Upstairs at Eric’s is one of my Favorite Albums of all-time.

Here’s to Thursday’s Best Songs from My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day. What are your Favorite Songs today?
