My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 3/28/17
LISTEN HERE AT SPOTIFY
Time for Tuesday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day. Time for a new 5 Songs that are spinning through speakers, playing through the ether, and right here ready for you to press play and turn the volume up. For this Tuesday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions we start off with an early Depeche Mode song, off the first album of theirs I owned, on cassette, I think. I heard a bit of “New Life” this morning while playing a British Synth documentary and was instantly reminded how much I love the song. Cocteau Twins is next. Another track off an album which was the first I owned for this band. Camera Obscura (pictured above) comes in at number 3, bringing us some “Razzle Dazzle Rose” on a Tuesday. The Glove touches us with “Like an Animal” for number 4, and then the 5 is rounded up with Ultravox’s hit, “Vienna”, a song I never grow tired of hearing.
You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I add each five songs shared to the playlist each day, so the playlist evolves as the week does.
My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “New Life” :: Depeche Mode
“You think you only know me when you turn on the light,
now the room is lit,
The first Depeche Mode album I owned was a “collection” album, Catching Up with Depeche Mode. I remember buying it at Licorice Pizza, down the hill and a few blocks from where I went to high school. I remember a friend of mine and I passing notes in the hallways. The biggest content of said notes were song lyrics, and sketched out band titles. This song’s lyrics are scrawled out on the line pages of a note I still have, folded up in neat squares and tucked into one of my yearbooks.
2. “Wax and Wane” :: Cocteau Twins
“The devil bite’s dirty,
we wax and wane.”
We listened to this album back-and-forth, turning the volume up, huddling close to the speakers, flicking cloves into a thrift shop ashtray. One night, with a bottle of cheap wine passed between us, we tried to decipher the lyrics. I don’t recall Garlands having them in the inner sleeve, though maybe I’d lost mine. “The devil bite’s dirty” was not what we came up with, though I couldn’t tell you the words we thought we heard.
3. “Razzle Dazzle Rose” :: Camera Obscura
“Expecting softness can lead to foolishness.”
Oh expectation, mixed up with longing, making us sometimes so naive.
4. “Like an Animal” :: The Glove
“Like an animal,
I still got love for you.”
I think I bought this album, Blue Sunshine, from a record store in Berkeley, during the same visit that included the wine fueled Cocteau Twins lyric game. I remember bringing home a wall sized poster of Siouxsie Sioux that trip, too, that took up one side of my bedroom of my first apartment.
5. “Vienna” :: Ultravox
“The rhythm is calling.
Alone in the night as the daylight brings,
a cool empty silence.”
I woke this morning with this song in my head. Its been stuck there ever since. Not a bad thing though. I’m glad I got to see this performed live earlier this year when Midge Ure played live.
