My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 3/27/17
LISTEN HERE AT SPOTIFY
What Music is playing on My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day today? Its a Monday, the day so many dread, but with Music isn’t anything conquerable, bearable, and maybe even joyous? For this Monday’s Top 5 Music Obsessions we tune in to The Supremes’ covering my favorite Sam Cooke song. From there we hear from Saint Etienne with “You’re In a Bad Way”. I chose a track from Pulp’s His ‘N’ Hers album for number three, and then a third released track from Goldfrapp’s soon-to-be-here album. The five Music Obsessions for Monday wind up with a track from Morcheeba (pictured above), “Friction”, taken off their 1998 album, Big Calm.
You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I add each five songs shared to the playlist each day, so the playlist evolves as the week does.
My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:
1. “Bring It On Home To Me” :: The Supremes
“If you ever,
change your mind,
about leaving,
leaving me behind,
bring it to me,
bring your sweet lovin’,
bring it on home to me.”
I had no idea that The Supremes had an entire album of Sam Cooke covers. This is a delightful surprise, especially as Sam Cooke is one of my all-time favorite singers. This song, my favorite Cooke track, sounds lovely, melodic, with the right amount of hope sewn in that the original always carried with it. I look forward to spinning the rest of the album today.
2. “You’re in a Bad Way” :: Saint Etienne
“Toast is burned,
and your coffee’s cold,
and you leave all the post,
’cause it’s nothing but bills again.”
Reminds me of a “Manic Monday” kind of song, perfect for a Monday. This is a fun, feel good, impossible not to smile kind of song. Another reason for it to be perfect for a Monday. Saint Etienne always reminds me of my trip to Manchester, UK. It was in a small record store that I picked up a double-CD, greatest hits album of theirs: London Conversations: The Best of Saint Etienne.
3. “Do You Remember the First Time?” :: Pulp
“Now I don’t care what you’re doing,
no I don’t care if you screw him.
just as long as you save a piece for me.”
Oh Uncle Jarvis, you always seem to capture the way adolescent, or early twenty-something love feels like. The kind that is fraught with desperation, with strung out feeling, with first times and starts and stops, and unrequited love.
4. “Moon in Your Mouth” :: Goldfrapp
“I want stay here now.
Every moment is a luxury.”
In preparation for this week’s release of Goldfrapp’s new album, Silver Eye, here is the latest pre-album single released by the band. This track, and “Ocean”, are both so fantastic. I cannot wait for their seventh album to get here.
5. “Friction” :: Morcheeba
“Friction is turning to fire.
Friction is burning much higher.”
A Spring song to me, full of newess and cool mornings, off-and-on rain falling from the sky, dancing, and love. The song features Spikey T on vocals.
