Today’s My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day’s music begins with Doves, a band I dove into yesterday after my fellow music obsessive boyfriend sent me one of their songs. Next up is Finley Quaye with William Orbit (and Beth Orton on backing vocals) which leads into another music introduction sent to me yesterday by said boyfriend, a bit psychedelic rock to swirl around to, with Max Pain and the Groovies. “Lost Weekend” comes next from one of lyriquediscorde’s frequently featured singer-songwriters, and then it all becomes five with some solo Graham Coxon.

You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I will add each five songs shared to the playlist each day.

My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 3/9/17

1. “Caught by the River” :: Doves

Stay here and lie on back.
Get down in the cornfields,
stay till we’re caught at last.”

I’d heard of the Doves before, and a song, or two, had come my way in playlists, or movie soundtracks, but I’d not ever really listened to them until yesterday afternoon. This was one that stood out immediately (along with a few others). This is definitely a band I will be exploring more.

2. “Dice” :: Finley Quaye and William Orbit

“Nothing can compare,
to when you roll the dice,
and swear that your love’s for me.”

How had I forgotten about this song? Its so beautiful, especially with Beth Orton’s vocals in the background. This one I will be continuing to obsess over through the rest of the week, if not longer.

3. He’s Come (The Stranger) :: Max Pain And The Groovies

“Try to look creative.”

Psychedelic rock sounds with fuzzy vocals that summon up images of smoky clubs, late night, just about nearing the dawn are what Salt Lake City’s Max Pain And The Groovies bring to the Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day.

This one should be played loudly.

4. “Lost Weekend” :: Pete Yorn

“You can tell the truth,
you can tell a lie,
say anything you want to say –
are we all just lost in time?”

As the weather warms and the afternoon is in my sights this song seems to fit perfectly. Also, I’m longing for the weekend, so the sentiment of a lost weekend, and needing another vacation resonate.

5. “You & I” :: Graham Coxon

“‘Cos it’s gonna be a while ,
’til I get to see you smile ,
and you gotta let me know…
or maybe you won’t.”

It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to Graham Coxon’s solo work. After spotting him in a live Paul Weller BBC concert last night via YouTube I was reminded that I’ve enjoyed his solo sonic adventures, especially songs off of the album Love Travels at Illegal Speeds.

Here we go Thursday – let’s turn up My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day.

What are you playing loudly today?
