“Two of Us on the Run” :: Lucius
from the album, Wildewoman (2014)

“Our favorite parts are what we’ll keep,
ornamental parts of love,
and parts of memories,
so everything else has room to grow.
‘Cause in better light,
everything changes.”

About the Song:

“Two of Us on the Run” is track 7 from Lucius debut album, Wildewoman. Mom + Pop Music released the album in North America in October 2013. Play It Again Sam released the album in UK and Europe, Australia, and Japan in March 2013.

Jess Wolf and Holly Laessig are the lead voices of Lucius. The band also includes drummer Dan Molad, guitarist Peter Lalish, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Burri.

My Thoughts:

A Thursday “throwback” poem I wrote, in October of 2016, with this song playing “Muse”, with some slight revisions:

Desert(ed)

We flicker off-an-on like strung out holiday lights
like the drain and fade of an unpaid utility bill
like the final wink-blink of oncoming headlights
that soon disappear into
this middle of night

I spot the exit up ahead
coming quick into view
you take a sharp right at the horizon line
almost colliding head first into that once familiar off-ramp
of us
that’s now just screams closed

Everything shrinks into a one-lane conclusion
collapsing into this last “last time”

Do you see it now?
The yellowing yield of a detour sign
the way it guides us up side streets
and near misses

We dodge the wreckage with a last minute turn of the wheel
slamming breaks squeal
joining in chorus with shuddered expletives
as my right hand automatically reaches to cover
your heart

As a young girl I used to sit quietly in the back
counting lines on the classroom clock
not wanting to admit that I couldn’t translate
numbers into time

You later taught me to read shadows
connecting my freckles and lines

This reroute lands us ten miles past Barstow
the desert dry covering everything in grey and grime
my eyes burn from all this open sky
from the sun-licked wind on my pinking skin
everything feeling like a scorpion’s sting

For a moment
I think you’ll leave me here
dangling precariously three last words

I know both of us are experts at running
at tripping on pretenses
and we hurry for the door

But you grab my left hand instead
circling each calloused year that’s past
on my open palm
whispering a Tarot card fortune
right between my ears
and my eyes

I can’t hear a single thing
until you finally
let go

My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 3/2/17
Listen here at Spotify

Thursday morning. Sleepy, but smiling. I need strong coffee and music to keep me going. Counting the days for the weekend. A trip away, a show to see, the best of company. Right now though, on this Thursday morning, its strong coffee and music, and smiling.

We’ll start with a new discovery band (thanks, Paul Weller, for the in-interview mention) from Canterbury, then its some melodic/electronic/sonic star-wandering music from Portishead. From that I have Arcade Fire reminding me to “Wake Up”, widening my eyes and gliding right into Razorlight’s “Golden Touch”.  Last, but not least, The Easybeats sing about “Friday on My Mind” (though its really Saturday, on mine).

You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I will add each five songs shared to the playlist each day.

1. “No Peace” (Sine of 4 Disco Remix Radio Edit) :: Syd Arthur, featuing Sine of 4

“I can’t get no peace.”

Syd Arthur is a brand new music discovery, found via a Paul Weller interview where he spoke of new music he was listening to (a few years back, not a brand new interview). This was one of the first songs we listened to, checking them out, though it was the original version/original video (good stuff, check it out). This is a one-to-watch band. I hope they come across the pond to tour sometimes.

2. “Wandering Star” :: Portishead

“Wandering stars,
for whom it is reserved –
the blackness of darkness,
forever.”

Dummy will always be one of my all-time favorite albums from the 90’s. The songs, like this one, never seem dated, and never get old to me. I want to float around in this song today.

3. “Wake Up” :: Arcade Fire

“Our bodies get bigger,
but our hearts get torn up.”

But sometimes they mend, they grow stronger, they believe again. Sometimes.

4. “Golden Touch” :: Razorlight

“But then when you’re not around,
they say, “oh, she’s changed.”
We know what they mean.
Well they mean,
they’re just jealous,
because they never do the things,
that they wish that they could do so well.”

Sometimes it seems the people closest to me distance themselves the most when I’m happy. I used to think it was me. That I was the one distancing, but no, I don’t think that’s it, or at least not all it. Though I’d agree that no matter how strong I am perceived to be, I need people when I’m hurt and sad and broken, but don’t we all need people when we are happy, too? I do.

I’ve been told its jealousy, but I think that is an over-simplification. When I think deeply on it I see a society that has learned to communicate the best when there are things to complain about. Have we all forgotten how to relate to happiness? Has happiness been lost in the translation?

5. “Friday on My Mind” :: The Easybeats

“Tonight,
I’ll spend my bread.
Tonight,
I’ll lose my head.
Tonight,
I’ve got to get to night.
Monday I’ll have Friday on my mind.”

Or Saturday…

There was Thursday’s My Top 5 Music Obsessions.
