My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 2/23/17
Listen here on Spotify
Hello Thursday, how’s it all going with you today?
Let’s press play and listen to a few songs, shall we? We can “Come On/Let’s Go” with some Weller, then blast up to “Saturn 5” with Inspiral Carpets. Wings will fly us back just in time to “feel lazy” with The Lightning Seeds, and then end the day with an ode to rain, and unrequited (with a hope to be requited) love.
You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I will add each five songs shared to the playlist each day.
1. “Come On/Let’s Go” :: Paul Weller
“I believe it’s true,
we are everywhere.”
Another Paul Weller song I’d never heard before sent my way from my brilliant, fellow music freak boyfriend. I like the beat in this, the movement and flow. It has a 90’s sensibility to me, even though it came off the 2005 album, As Is Now. This adds to just one more reason I hope I get to see Weller play live someday.
2. “Saturn 5” :: Inspiral Carpets
you really were the greatest sight,
stretching out on a summer’s day –
Houston is calling me back to her.”
The first time I heard this song I was reading Douglas Coupland’s book, All Families are Psychotic. Since then, the book, the characters and this song are linked in my mind.
3. “Let ‘Em In” :: Wings
“Someone’s knockin’ at the door.
Somebody’s ringin’ the bell.”
Hello 1976. Hello 7-year old me. Hello house on Eighteenth Street with the hardwood floors and big stereo speakers, and those records of my Mom’s. This song is like a time travel machine, hoisting me up, and shooting me back to that house, that living room, those speakers, and that life of mine, in 1976.
4. “Feeling Lazy” :: The Lightning Seeds
“Monday starts all over,
Tuesday safe behind your blinds.
Come on over,
we can spend an hour or two.”
Another band I am rediscovering. I feel like there are many songs I missed out on with The Lightning Seeds that I’m now uncovering, playing, and enjoying. This is a favorite of the songs I’m hearing from them for the first time. This one I can’t seem to get enough of.
5. “Ray Ray Rain” :: Bettie Serveert
“I watch your right hand shifting gear,
wondering what I’m doing here,
’cause both our minds,
are occupied by memories.”
I was living in an upstairs apartment. The one with the claw-foot tub and rounded front room. Some nights, when sleep eluded me, and the anxiety of my falling apart relationship nagged at me, I would turn on MTV and let the videos wash over me. It was the mid-90’s. This video would come on every once in awhile. I remember writing their name down, and going the next day to buy both the Lamprey album (which this track is on) and the Palomine album.
There is something about this song that tugs at my heartstrings, and always makes me tear up.
And that’s all for today…those were the 5 songs from My Top 5 Music Obsessions.
