My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day :: 2/16/17
Listen here on Spotify

A foggy early Thursday turning into cartoon clouds in a bright blue sky. The music for today has run the course of the changing weather along with me, starting with a song lingering from last night, to a lesser known New Order single, to a track from 1966 to sway to, then on to an underrated band from early aughts that leads into today’s finish with a favorite Stones song of mine.

You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I will add each five songs shared to the playlist each day.

My Top 5 Music Obsessions of the Day:

1. “Hip Teens (Don’t Wear Blue Jeans)” :: Frank Popp Ensemble

“Eternal yak,
that really goes,
high heel sneakers,
with pointed toes.
Mini shirts and Chelsea boots,
the smartest boys in velvet suits.”

Utterly catchy meet-up of Northern Soul and Electronica. I’m not sure why this wasn’t a bigger hit. I think had it come out a few years later (say 2003-2006), it would have arrived during the emergence of Amy Winehouse, Duffy, early Adele, Mark Ronson and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (though she did have an album in 2000, and this Frank Popp Ensemble song is from 2001). I’m glad to know the song now, though.

If you like it you should check out the album in its entirety – Ride On! (click for Spotify link) – its great!

2. “Krafty” :: New Order

“Give me one more day,
one more day.
Give me another night,
just another night.”

I had completely forgotten about this song. But, as I make my way through New Order’s catalog, in anticipation of seeing them live (first time!) in April, I re-discovered it.

3. “Don’t Tease Me” :: Question Mark & The Mysterians

“You got me under your skin and I need you right now.”

The organ at the start of this is ridiculously cool. Turn this one up – loud – and throw on a pair of sunglasses (wraparound, of course). Maybe we can all pretend we are from Mars and played with dinosaurs in our past lives whilst communicating with the future, like Question claimed to. Or, perhaps you’ll just want to groove along.

4. “All ‘Cause of You” :: The 88

“You’re the only one I wanna do,
everything’s new,
and it’s all ’cause of you.”

Underrated band from 2005. I feel like they got passed over during the deluge of the early aughts indie rock bands. The 88 has a bit of the The Fratellis’ spirit, a pinch of Razorlight’s melodies, and a sense of play that Rooney and OK Go had back in those early ’00’s. That said, there is something uniquely “them” in their songs, something that made them stand out to me, at the time.

This track’s always been my favorite.

5. “Some Girls” :: The Rolling Stones

“Some girls get the shirt off my back,
and leave me with a lethal dose.”

This reminds me of a theme idea – “list” songs. This song listing all the different girls, much like “88 Lines about 44 Women” or even The Beach Boys’ “California Girls”…and those are just off the top of my head (and girl-related). Hmmm…

Wave goodbye to Thursday’s My Top Five Music Obsessions. What have you pressed play to, today?
