My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: California, Part 4
Listen as a playlist on Spotify
My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day, Day 4, California song themed. You can click to listen to each video below, or choose the Spotify link to listen to the My Top 5 Song Obsessions of the Day :: Top Five playlist. I will add each five songs shared to the playlist each day.
1. “Ode to L.A.” :: The Raveonettes
“Come on let’s go to where it’s fun.
I want a slice of L.A. sun.”
The most happy-go-lucky California song in the bunch, so far, though something about this makes me wonder if tongues are securely in cheeks for this “ode”. This reminds me of the 50’s jukebox songs my Aunt used to love to play, the ones I grew to love and started to collect on 45″ when I could find them. This song feels like summertime to me, too. I think it belongs on the next “Summer” playlist I make.
2. “Let Me Back In” :: Rilo Kiley
“But, when the palm trees bow their heads,
no matter how wrong I’ve been –
you always let me back in.”
Of all the California songs featured this week, and of all the California songs I have collected over the years, it is this song I relate most to. I feel like I could have written it, the leaving, and coming back. Beth Hart’s song, up next, is a close second, for the same reasons. The love/hate, the leaving/coming, and the magnetic pull the state has on me (especially Los Angeles).
3. “L.A. Song” (live) :: Beth Hart
“It’s all she loves,
it’s all she hates,
it’s all too much for her to take.
She can’t be sure just where it ends,
or where the good life,
This one is tied with the Rilo Kiley one above. This one almost always makes me cry. I feel like all my insides are in these lyrics.
4. “San Andreas Fault Line Blues” :: Shovels & Rope
“Going to California,
going to LA,
the sunshine burns my eyes,
but I stare at it anyway.
I can only hope to get the hang of it someday.”
Late night road trip music. Leaving Los Angeles to drive through the desert, just before sunrise, music. Feeling lost in a place that you have nearly always called home music. The lonely and the lovers in the city music.All in this song. I love the “hundred grievous angels” reference.
5. “California Stars” :: Billy Bragg & Wilco
“Yes, I’d give my life,
to lay my head tonight,
on a bed,
of California stars.”
So tired today – this song just fits.
There went Day 4 of the California-themed, My Top Five Song Obsessions of the Day. Today it The Raveonettes with a little 50’s optimism (with, or without, a wink), Jenny Lewis with Rilo Kiley singing about leaving, and coming back, to Los Angeles. Beth Hart singing about the very same thing. Shovels & Rope storytelling about the fault line, and the darker moments of the night…oh and Billy and Wilco’s California lullaby.
