Songs about mirrors  :: Top 10 Tuesday

The new year brings about a lot of moments of reflection. We sit back and page through the memories we have of the past year, sometimes going further, sometimes whirling about in nostalgia, in looking back. I have done it myself over the last few days, and thinking about thinking about things got me thinking that “reflections” and “mirrors” might make for a good “Top 10 Tuesday” theme.

What “mirror” song would you choose?

1. I’ll Be Your Mirror :: The Velvet Underground

“When you think the night has seen your mind,
that inside you’re twisted and unkind,
let me stand to show that you are blind.
Please put down your hands,
’cause I see you.”

2. Winter :: Tori Amos

“Mirror mirror,
where’s the crystal palace?
But I only can see myself,
skating around the truth,
who I am.”

3. Mirror Man :: The Human League

“Here comes the mirror man –
says he’s a people fan.”

4. Lucretia, My Reflection :: Sisters Of Mercy

“I hear the sons of the city and dispossessed,
get down,
get undressed.
Get pretty,
but you and me –
we got the kingdom,
we got the key.
We got the empire,
now as then.
We don’t doubt,
we don’t take direction –
Lucretia, my reflection,
dance the ghost with me.”

5. Mirrorball :: Elbow

My sorry name has made it to graffiti,
I was looking for someone to complete me.
Not anymore dear –
everything has changed.”

6. Mirror, Mirror :: Whiskeytown

“Tell me something about what I saw in the face of a man,
who once felt it all,
but feels nothing today.”

7. Dancing in the Dark :: Bruce Springsteen

“Message keeps getting clearer,
radio’s on and I’m moving ’round the place.
I check my look in the mirror,
I want to change my clothes, my hair, my face.
Man, I ain’t getting nowhere,
I’m just living in a dump like this.
There’s something happening somewhere,
baby, I just know that there is.”

8. Black Mirror :: Arcade Fire

“I walk down to the ocean,
after waking from a nightmare.
No moon,
no pale reflection.”

9. Hall of Mirrors :: Siouxsie & The Banshees

“She stepped into the hall of mirrors,
where she discovered a reflection of herself.”

10. Deep Dark Truthful Mirror :: Elvis Costello

“One day you’re going to have to face,
a deep dark truthful mirror,
and it’s going to tell you things,
that I still love you too much,
to say.”

  1. Most Excellent songs! I’ll add: “Mirrored” by Mark Lanegan, “Mirrorball” demo by Everything But the Girl, “Roomful of Mirrors” by Jimi Hendrix and ‘Reflected” by Massive Attack.
