My Top 5 New Releases :: New Music Friday :: Week of 5/23/16

1. X-Communicate :: Kristin Kontrol

3

Three-Sentence Review: There is something very eighties about this album, in the sounds, the electronics infused over the melodies and guitars, and something in the entire feeling and sensibility of the songs (a little bit Siouxsie Sioux, a little Cocteau Twins and a little bit Go-Go’s – with some modern indie-punk/pop thrown in). This is a departure from the Dum Dum Girls, but not a drastic one (though I personally am preferring this). This is definitely going to be a favorite album of the year for me.

Initial Favorite Track(s)Show Me, White Street and Smoke Rings

Rating (1-5 Stars): 5+

Show Me

2. By Default :: Band Of Skulls

1.jpg

Three-Sentence Review: The opening track rocks and invites and pulls me right in, casting its “Black Magic” on me, reminding me why I love this band (and makes me want to see them live – and here this song, and “Killer”, live – real, real bad). Some of these songs are so catchy, with punk rock and pop sensibilities meeting up (addictive, short and impossible not to move, and sing-a-long to) that I already feel like they are favorites, even after just a first, or second, listen. There’s some blues here, too (see: “This Is My Fix” and “In Love by Default”) and some indie-heartbreak gems that are destined to find their way onto “I want you/fall for me” or “I miss you/my heart breaks over you” playlists.

Initial Favorite Track(s): Black Magic, KillerThis Is My Fix and Something

Rating (1-5 Stars): 5+

Killer

3. Mark Kozelek Sings Favorites :: Mark Kozelek

2.jpg

Three-Sentence Review: I love cover songs in a big, big way, and I especially enjoy when artists make songs their own, and interpret them differently. This album is full of beautiful melancholy, a starkness that is cloying and moving and evocative. I found myself especially moved by the unexpected Christmas song, “O Holy Night”, that actually made me cry, and his take on “Float On” that feels like you need a shot of whiskey to take in – not a bad thing to need – oh, and “I’m Not In Love” is gorgeous, and heartbreaking, to me.

Initial Favorite Track(s): I’m Not In Love, O Holy Night and Float On

Rating (1-5 Stars): 5

I’m Not In Love

4. Kidsticks :: Beth Orton

3

Three-Sentence Review: This is definitely electronic-infused alt-folk at its best, reminding me of some of Beth’s earlier music, as well as being reminiscent, to me, of Tori Amos work with BT. There is a World Music feel to this album, as well, that is really working here – especially on the opening two tracks, “Snow” and “Moon”. 1973 has such a seventies/disco vibe to it, I can’t help but love it – catchy, dancey and fun.

Initial Favorite Track(s): Moon, 1973 and Falling

Rating (1-5 Stars): 4

1973

5. Machines of War :: Joseph Arthur

1

Three-Sentence Review: New music from Joseph Arthur makes me happy. It also makes me hungry for more and anxious for the new album, The Family, which will be released on June 3rd. This is a dark and haunting song about war, set to such beautiful melody and orchestration.

Initial Favorite Track(s): N/A (single)

Rating (1-5 Stars): 4

  1. Dying to hear more Kristin Kontrol. The song you posted is only the second song I’ve heard from her album (and this is the first time I’m hearing this second song, too). I miss Dum Dum Girls but I’m happy to have this solo album and for me it’s just a bonus like when The Killers go on hiatus and Brandon does his solo albums. Like “this is different, okay, okay OKAY I LOVE IT”… I’m glad to hear you like this (and prefer it) because that just makes me more excited it’s going to be amazing. Ana (blogger Ana but I’m sure you knew what I meant!) is a HUGE fan.

    1. Hi Susan! I was actually nervous about this album because I’m such a huge DDG fan, but so far (bought it yesterday) I’m really liking it and I think a week of bingeing on it and I’ll love it. So glad you included it Laura!
