My Top 5 New Releases :: New Music Friday :: Week of 5/16/16

1. Day of the Dead :: Various Artists

Three-Sentence Review: Oh my stars, this is an amazing compilation with some of my favorite artists and bands covering the Grateful Dead – Jenny Lewis, The National, Phosphorescent, The War On Drugs, Courtney Barnet, Perfume Genius…I could go on. The Dead’s songs translate remarkably to indie/alt/folk/rock, much more than I could ever have imagined. This may be one of my favorite listens of the year.

Initial Favorite Track(s)Touch of Grey, Sugaree, Peggy-O, Friend of the Devil, Ripple, etc. (Really! I could go on…)

Rating (1-5 Stars): 5+

Sugaree :: Phosphorescent & Jenny Lewis & Friends

2. Liar :: Declan McKenna

Three-Sentence Review: He’s a baby at seventeen, but his voice and his songs seem like they come from someone well beyond his years. I hear a little Mumford in his vocals, but the songs and music itself reminds me more of Jamie T and The Streets. This is really good stuff, enough so that I’m sad its only a 4-song EP. Declan is one to watch.

Initial Favorite Track(s)Brazil, Bethlehem  and Howl

Rating (1-5 Stars): 5

Brazil

3. I am a Nightmare :: Brand New

Three-Sentence Review: A new Brand New single? This makes me ridiculously happy, and I’m already addicted to this rather power-pop release. The song is already stuck in my head, and has me itching for more.

Initial Favorite Track(s): N/A (single)

Rating (1-5 Stars): 5

I am a Nightmare

4. Strangers :: Marissa Nadler

Three-Sentence Review: My first thought is this “grown-up goth”, as “Divers of the Dust” swirls around me, sweeping me up in a mix-up of nostalgia and last night’s dreams. This is a gorgeous collection of songs, ones that I want to spend time with, and write to. These songs, on their own, feel like stories, and I want to write my own, to them.

Initial Favorite Track(s)Katie I Know,  Hungry is the Ghost and All the Colors of the Dark

Rating (1-5 Stars): 4

All the Colors of the Dark :: Marissa Nadler

5. Teens of Denial :: Car Seat Headrest

Three-Sentence Review: Impossible not to turn up loud and move around to, this album is a little bit punk, a little bit garage, a little bit indie and a little bit rock – I hear some Clash, Ramones and Sonic Youth as inspiration, but I also hear some Lemonheads, Girlpool and Ex Hex in this, too. I’d like to see this band play live.

Initial Favorite Track(s)Fill in the Blank, Just What I Needed/Not Just What I Needed and Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales

Rating (1-5 Stars): 4

Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales
