“Not to put too fine a point on it,
say I’m the only bee in your bonnet –
make a little birdhouse in your soul.”
About the song:
“Birdhouse in Your Soul” was released on 1989, and was the first single on They Might Be Giants’ album, Flood. The song reached #3 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart and #6 on the U.K. Singles Chart. In Australia, the song peaked at #125 on the ARIA singles chart.
The song is sung from the point-of-five of a nightlight.
I was working at my first record store job when this song came out. I remember Flood being played often during morning shifts, when the store was slowly waking up. We’d be unpacking shipment boxes and shelving music as the sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
This song feels 90’s to me, even though it came out in 1989. I guess is a on-the-cusp song as I just heard it this morning on a massive 90’s playlist.
I love the idea of an inanimate object singing the song. It makes me want to hunt down a blue canary nightlight, actually.
