On the Road :: Friday Five
“I saw the years of my life spaced along a road in the form of telephone poles threaded together by wires. I counted one, two, three… nineteen telephone poles, and then the wires dangled into space, and try as I would, I couldn’t see a single pole beyond the nineteenth.” ~ Sylvia Plath
Maybe its because I’m itching for a road trip (well, when am I not?), but I woke with a wanting for songs about the road. So, come along with me and my Top 5 road songs.
What would yours be?
1. America :: Simon And Garfunkel
“Counting the cars on the New Jersey turnpike,
they’ve all come to look for America.”
2. Roads (live) :: Portishead
“How can it feel, this wrong?
From this moment –
how can it feel,
this wrong?”
3. La Cienega Just Smiled (live) :: Ryan Adams
“And I hold you close in the back of my mind,
feels so good,
but damn it makes me hurt.
And I’m too scared to know how I feel about you now.
La Cienega just smiled,
‘see ya around'”
4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road :: Elton John
“You know you can’t hold me forever,
I didn’t sign up with you,
I’m not a present for your friends to open,
this boy’s too young to be singing the blues.”
5. On the Road :: Angus And Julia Stone
“She don’t like it when I’m on the road.”
“Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.”
~ Jack Kerouac
