The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row :: SOTD

Keep Art Alive :: Art by Sarah Joncas

“I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere,
when the water filled every hole.
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean,
making islands where no
island should go.”

by me

Plaster casts and pharmaceutical walls
the numb settles itself in
while the water rises
filling my lungs with rusted debris

I open the window and try
not to breathe you in

The ceramic cracks and leaves a mark
splitting my paling skin
coffee seeping into me
mixing with my bloodstream

And I can taste you then
on the tip of every word

You wave at me with unseen gestures
telephone lined lies
over late at night paid programming

I listen carefully to my crumbling walls
as they begin to fall

I can see it there clinging to this foggy city
while you squint over an unfolded map
breaking a limb clean and clear
from that heart-shaped tree

As I whisper to this nothing
I wish you were here
