Keep Art Alive :: “Ver’s Lantern” :: Art by Amy Sol

“Moons and Junes and ferris wheels,
the dizzy dancing way that you feel,
as every fairy tale comes real;
I’ve looked at love that way.
But now it’s just another show.
You leave ’em laughing when you go
and if you care,
don’t let them know,
don’t give yourself away.”

Her circus
by me

Tents packed up and loaded on truck beds
ruby red with a rusting trim
as the dust spirals
like thoughts
or wishes

It will take days to settle
her world still covered in grit
and grime
coating her in memory

She stands where a crowd once was
waving at nothing

She never said stay with me
she never said anything at all

Clapping along with the manic paint faces
children with open mouths
sugar-coated teeth and shaking limbs
they wait all year for this taste

She shows up every year with them
to see her wordless wonder
dangling above
drifting, falling, dancing on air
music playing from his blue sky eyes

He never said come with me
he’ll never say anything at all
