13 Going on 30 (2004) :: Monday Movie Soundtracks

The movie opens with my favorite song by The Go-Go’s, Head Over Heels, as we start out story in 1987, with a 13-year old Jenna. When we jump ahead to 2004, with Jenna now, age 30, the song starts again as she awkwardly tries to catch a cab. She’s off to find her long-lost best friend, Matty, who you can’t help but hope is also her love interest (or maybe that’s because I’ve always had such a crush on Mark Ruffalo).

Music continues to play a significant part in this film, mostly hits from the 80’s that Jenna connects to from “home”, and which help her cope with this alternate, thirty, flirty and thriving reality she finds herself in. Michael Jackson’s Thriller is integral in one of my favorite scenes, as is Pat Benatar’s Love is a Battlefield.

Thriller saves the day (or, at least, the party)

My favorite song on the album is the underrated Vienna, by Billy Joel. I fell in love with this song because of this movie. It is, by far, my favorite song on the soundtrack.
