Color The Lion :: Keep Art Alive :: 10 Questions Project
1. What music (or other art form) inspires you when you create your art?
That’s like asking what food do you like to eat when you eat, lol! There’s no specific type of music that inspires us, just like there’s two-same moments in time, creating just hits you when it hits you and you either stop everything you’re doing and go with the idea, or let it pass – that decision can lead to your next great record or your next cup of coffee, its up to the artist to decide.
2. Long distance road trip: what three people do you invite along (fictional or non-fictional, dead or alive)?
Plato, Leonardi Da Vinci and Mozart; they each knew something we definitely don’t know now and we have SO many questions lol.
3. What is your favorite breakfast cereal?
Honestly, any cereal that doesn’t include yoga mats or arsenic in it’s ingredients; its hard to find anything to eat nowadays in the US without it being laced with crap.
4. What is one thing that is hanging on your bedroom wall?
A watercolor painting Jesse, our bassist/guitarist painted of a being floating in their aura, fully aligned chakras & such; Jesse is an interesting and complex creature.
5. What smell/scent evokes strong memories for you?
Hmm… each of us are in varied stages of hunger at any point. If you want to evoke happiness and us coming to you, all you need to do is cook something that smells amazing & we’re there!
6. Coffee or tea?
Black coffee, no sugar no cream- just the coffee please!
7. What has been the most impactful compliment, or criticism, you have ever received?
I think for us it’s been that no one can put us into a box. Everyone that’s heard our music says its nothing they’ve ever heard before and they love it since, according to them, everything they have been listening to sounds like itself; we think that’s the best complement you can receive as an artist, incomparable to any other because its unique and stands alone, like each of us do, we are all so complex and different, yet talented and complementary to each other.
8. Three words that describe you?
Awake Aware Ready
9. What is/was your cartoon character crush?
Idk if we had crushes on cartoon characters, but there were definitely favorites:
Julissa: Bugs bunny- hands-down my favorite cartoon character, i once ate so many carrots that my skin pigment started turning orange
10. The world is ending in ten minutes and you get to listen to one, and only one, song: Which song?
Any song that our parents sung for us as children would be the only thing we would want to hear before we pass on. We can’t think of anything else that can replace that. The band has an EP that was just released a few weeks ago, and I recommend checking-it out. Their sound reminds me a little of early Metric, Shiny Toy Guns, Tegan And Sara and Foster The People.
Planet Earth
Color The Lion embraces positivity in their music, and their view of the world. Their philosophy is “that music should feel good, that a song can have a message that isn’t putting anybody down, and that celebrates what makes each person unique.” They have also said that their “music centers around attempting to change our piece of the musical landscape for the better.” So much good feeling in all of that, but they walk the walk, not just talk the talk, and you can hear that positive-ness in the songs. You do feel good while listening – I know that I did.
My favorite track of Color The Lion’s EP, 1’s and 3’s, is tied between French Toast (see below) and Planet Earth (see above). There is pop sensibilities in the songs, an effervesence, a danceable feeling that gets into your bloodstream, and that bit of edge that drops this in the indie-pop category versus mainstream pop. You will not be able to sit still when you listen to these songs. You will be compelled to dance.
