“In my sky you’ll always be my morning star.”
paper cut reminders
by me
we break before bending
these paper versions of ourselves
all the things left unsaid
could fill one of those sets of encyclopedias
that I loved as a child
memorizing dinosaur scales and state capitals
and all of you
I try to memorize everything about you
the way your eyes disappear when you laugh
the childhood accent that’s never gone away
tears that hang precariously on your eyelashes
when there’s nothing left to say
except for goodbye
I take them with me now
tucked tight within my back pocket
and inside all this hopeless dreaming
to become nothing but memories someday
but for now they are my setting sun
and wandering stars
my version of you
