“Jodie wears a hat although it hasn’t rained for six days,
she says a girl needs a gun these days,
hey, on account of all the rattlesnakes.”

(#ThrowbackThursday – old writing of mine)

I’ll be  your Bonnie, Clyde
by me
originally written in 2004

Bloodlines and bribery,
simple breaths cut like ice,
for those with heart sleeves,
and memorized alibis.

And yet the pulse quickens,
a car crash character study,
the director shaking a finger.

Wear your very best,
regret around the collar,
confess the latest,
to the water cooler witch hunt.

We whisper word static,
from hostage taped mouths,
put the money in unmarked bags, baby,
and run like hell.

Still the earth spins,
a ride on the roundabout,
into screaming cacophonies,
as birth and death surround.

  1. “a car crash character study” that line made me think of that song “Understanding in a Car Crash”. I love how you ended this poem especially because of how it appeared as I scrolled down, it was effective–I feel like it could be adapted into a short film.
