Peter Dreimanis from July Talk :: Keep Art Alive :: 10 Questions Project

6579

  1. What music (or other art form) inspires you when you create your art?

Everything from Nick Cave to Michael Jackson to Cold War Kids to By Divine Right to Angel Olsen to Spoon to Lucinda Williams.

  1. Long distance road trip: what three people do you invite along (fictional or non-fictional, dead or alive)?

Emmy Lou Harris for the road stories.

Lloyd Dobler for the love stories.

Matt Mays for the party.

  1. What is your favorite breakfast cereal?

Homemade Granola.

  1. What is one thing that is hanging on your bedroom wall?

Leah has way cooler things on her walls than I do on mine. My personal favourite in her room is an entire wall covered in black and white photos of boobs.

  1. What smell/scent evokes strong memories for you?

Matches.

  1. Coffee or tea?

Coffee. No wait – tea. I mean coffee makes me feel like garbage but I like drinking it more than tea.

  1. What has been the most impactful compliment, or criticism, you have ever received?

I guess Leah and I spoke a lot about honesty within performance when we first met. It has definitely pushed me to be more present in July Talk shows and see the audience relationship as something that should fluctuate throughout the show. I think I’ve learned to be brave and confront the audience more.

  1. Three words that describe you?

That describe July Talk? Manic, Spontaneous, Fun.

That describe me? Driven, Silly, Superstitious.

  1. What is/was your cartoon character crush?

Ned Flanders.

  1. The world is ending in ten minutes and you get to listen to one, and only one, song: Which song?

A Case of You by Joni Mitchell.

A Case of You :: Joni Mitchell

Editor’s Note: Fantastic choice. This is one of my favorite songs ever, especially lyrically speaking. I was just thinking that hearing you and Leah cover this, stripped down, perhaps with just a piano like the Wilco cover you both did, would be amazing!

A good friend and fellow blogger, who has tremendous music, raved and raved about this band, and was thrilled when I reviewed their EP awhile back (see here). I am excited to finally see them live tomorrow at The Echo in Hollywood, and if you are in Southern California I urge you to come join me. Tickets are available here. For those not in the SoCal area, check for future tour dates here.

  1. You will not be disappointed with July Talk’s live show. I saw them last year and it was brilliant, like the reenactment of the war of the sexes in every song. Their stage presence and energy is at a level far above what you would think such a new band would have.
