Keep Art Alive :: “Too Fast For Love” :: Art by Tara McPherson
“She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak,
I’ve been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks.”
(#ThrowbackThursday – old writing of mine)
A table setting for love
originally written in August 2004
Your love is conflicting,
thick and sticky;
it gets caught in my hair and my teeth.
I try to find the air holes,
the side doors,
momentary breathing escapes;
but I end up facing you sideways and upside down.
My heart is a knotted thorn patch,
lit up and miscalculated,
she longs for wings and a soft place to land.
I try to spell it out for you,
orderly and honestly,
yet I stumble into your sorrowful glances down.
I don’t want to be devoured by you,
broken and bloody;
picking up the pieces of me off the hardwood floor.
You don’t want me to see the world,
freedom is emergency;
your alarms ring through the blank night sky.
this life is a whirlwind,
torrential and ruthless,
I wander in and out of the possibility of flight.
this love is unsettled,
tipping and tilting;
and I’m really not sure whether to be eaten or to indulge.
This love is a table set for starvation,
and a drought set to intoxicate,
with and without us.

I ❤️ Father John Misty’s cover of this magnificent song! Amazing poem, btw! Another one you should be submitting for publication!
I love that cover, too. Love Father John Misty’s music. Thanks for the support and encouragement.
