after dark

Keep Art Alive :: “After Dark” :: Art by Sarah Joncas

Thunder only happens when it’s raining,
players only love you when they’re playing

Until the rain ends
by me

Early morning’s sunrise hides behind this city’s toxic haze
my eyes squint to make out the dance of words across a screen
missing the momentary break in the sky that let in a glimpse of blue
we will always miss something when we do it this way

And I swore that I’d never do this kind of thing again
miles outstretching between where one is without the other
waiting for the sound of wheels on pavement will bring me to ruin
but there you are crossing yet another state line with and without me

and here I am letting you

Turning the sound of your fingers on worn out strings into a lullaby
even if its three in the afternoon in this forget-me-not city
last night I could hear the rain crash down in the back of our conversation
the echoes of weather and wonder painting want into every word

I remind you these things never work
only lasting until the jukebox quarters run out
and the last of the side of the road coffee is gone
when there’s just one last encore to play

and then you’ll be gone

But while the music plays and the rain falls down
and while these words still weave together
we pretend that smog makes the sun more beautiful
that distance makes something more than fond

I’ll hang on to the notion that you’ll come back this way again
the dogs need to be fed and all those plants they still need water
maybe we can wait out this thing another season
another daylight savings of you singing good morning in my ear

and maybe you won’t forget me when this song is really over
