Keep Art Alive :: “Let Go” :: Art by Sarah Joncas
“Love has been waiting, patient and kind.
Just wanting a phone call or some kind of sign,
That the one that she cares for,
who’s out of his mind,
will make it back safe to her arms.
Hate stumbles forward and leans in the door.
Weary head hung down, eyes to the floor.
He says “Love, I’m sorry”,
and she says, “What for?
I’m yours and that’s it, whatever.
I should not have been gone for so long.
I’m yours and that’s it, forever.”
You’re mine and that’s it, forever.”

by me
The alarm bells clang and rang
shooting firecrackers into the sky
she rolls back over
playing disappear under the blankets
like when she was young
like when she would pull the world in close
shut her eyes
and wish all the monsters away
The morning still comes though
like a spell that’s been cast
and she notices then the space left beside her
its been weeks now,
and so many hours since she felt his skin
so much for forever
so much for right now
its okay though
she’s been getting herself ready
Endings they always come faster than imagined
but they come nonetheless
so she wears her heart heavy and hidden beneath
a red lipped smile
a dress of well never mind
and all those lyrics she’s memorized
He loves her though
and he hates that he hesitates
weaving golden threads of someone else between his fingers
making a laundry list of excuses
of how misery loves his company
of how this right here is enough
and that risk is the one song he never can sing
And she loves him still
even at a distance
through the storm clouds and rain pouring out of each eye
he lives in her bones
in the space between ribs and regard
though she wraps a coat of hate around her shoulders
borrowed from the mundane and the settled for silence
This will kills us,
she whispers to no one
or make us cling to sleep
forever
How long should she wait for it
how long should she wait for him
wait for love
or for a goodbye
The alarm bells will still ring and the stars will slice open the sky
regardless of the roads they choose
but there were reasons spoken
and promises made
on a cloudy skied afternoon in the sand
she said she’s his
and he said forever
but my darling dark eyed lover
what is forever
you never did say for sure
The Ballad of Love and Hate (live) :: The Avett Brothers
Wow! Definitely one of your best poems!
Thanks so much. It was an experiment. I just wrote without thinking, steam of consciousness while the music played and then let it be. No editing, no title yet either, as it was just what came out of me.
That’s the best way…just write…letting go and the words create when you let it be
Yes
your writing fucking kills me Lore.
p.s. this time next year…
