Keep Art Alive :: Art by Jonathan Viner

“And at once I knew I was not magnificent.
Hulled far from the highway aisle,
jagged, vacance, thick with ice;
I could see for miles, miles, miles.”

by me

You left in silence
cool and uncollected
the echo of nothing as jarring
as a dial tone just before the operator interrupts
reminding you to hang up
and leave it behind

There were reasons
pages to unspool and deconstruct
enough to write songs about
enough to tape my mouth shut
and tie my writing hand behind my back
you’ve blocked me incomplete

And now you want to speak aloud
break bread over broken promises
the uncertainty permeates like an oil spill
leaving stains on my skin and the irises of each eye
I see nothing now when I open them
just a reverse image of your naked skin on mine

You left in shadows
cloaked and covered
the words I won’t let go
shattering like a collision of cheer
two glasses filled with overwhelming hope
the splinters they keep bleeding

I still see you in the distance
miles between us
outstretched in a dream
your eyes squinting into focus
waving to me
waving goodbye

Though you never waved goodbye
