Friday Five/Evan & Juliana Day :: My Top Five Songs from The Lemonheads and Juliana Hatfield
A Friday Five Double Feature

It’s that day again, the 14th of the month that myself and fellow blogger and music lover, Susan of At the Library (go check her out today, too), have deemed our own celebrated Evan & Juliana Day. This month, since it falls on a Friday, I am dedicating the weekly Friday Five installment to “My Top 5 Lemonheads songs and My Top 5 Juliana Hatfield songs”. To keep this simple, or at least to help me narrow down to 5 each (so hard!) I am limiting them to Lemonheads songs, and not any other Evan-work, and to Juliana Hatfield or Juliana Hatfield Three songs, and not any other work such as Blake Babies, Minor Alps, etc. Yes, I realize that Juliana was part of The Lemonheads, but for this Friday installment I am separating Lemonheads and Juliana, just because, well, I want to. So, without further ado, here are my Top Five for this E&J Friday.

My high-school dream was to be in a band, pay my rent and eat – and I’ve been able to do that for 20 years. So I’m completely content.” ~ Evan Dando

Let’s start with my Top 5 songs from The Lemonheads. What are yours?

1. It’s a Shame About Ray

“If I make it through today,
I’ll know tomorrow not to put my feelings out on display.”

2. My Drug Buddy

“We have to laugh to look at each other,
we have to laugh ’cause we’re not alone.”

3. Become the Enemy

“And oh, what you say to me,
it’s not how love’s supposed to be.”

4. If I Could Talk I’d Tell You

“You are far and away,
my most imaginary friend.”

5. The Outdoor Type

“I can’t go away with you on a rock climbing weekend.
What if somethings on tv and its never shown again?”

When I first started making music, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just wanted to write songs. I didn’t have a concept. I didn’t think it through. I was just flailing around doing what comes naturally. It took me a really long time to step back and deal with what I was doing with any kind of perspective or self-awareness.” ~ Juliana Hatfield

And now, here are my Top 5 songs from Juliana Hatfield. What are yours?

1. Feelin’ Massachusetts

“Take me to the ocean and leave me there,
leave me all alone with the sun and air.”

2. Everybody Loves Me But You

“Everybody loves me,
everyone but you,
but nobody undoes me like the thought of you can do.”

3. Choose Drugs

I say it’s me or drugs,
you choose drugs

4. My Darling

Sweet on the outside,
but bitter on the inside

5. I See You

I close my eyes and I see you
I open ’em wide and I see you

  1. 5 each?! I’m impressed, that’s tough! Love all these pics, the quotes and pictures you picked out, so perfect.
We may have a song or two in common in our Top 5, I’ll have to get cracking on it.
This post really made me smile!

  2. Reblogged this on At the Library and commented:
Only 5 each? So hard! Bravo to Laura Morgan for choosing.
I’m taking this as a challenge, to narrow in on my favorites and see what I come up with. Great post, great songs! Thanks for the inspiration. I love this.

  3. I couldn’t name 5 Hatfield songs but I love the Lemonheads and your top five is great… Though I might add Confetti and Alison’s starting to happen…
