Songs about Monsters

Back to the month-long Friday Top 5 themes of “Spooky October” at lyriquediscorde. This Friday our theme is monsters, specifically songs about monsters. Though I would argue what society deems as “monsters” over history, and the misuse of the word, for this theme I’ll turn my focus to the fictitious monsters, and the songs about them, knowing that not all “monsters” are villains, I mean, hey, some of them just want to get their groove on and dance to a Monster Mash (see above).

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Sometimes human places, create inhuman monsters.”
~ Stephen King

Oh, monsters are scared,” said Lettie. “That’s why they’re monsters.”
~ Neil Gaiman

What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark? It would be like sleep without dreams.”
~ Werner Herzog

Following are my Top 5 songs about Monsters. Do you have any?

1. Monster Mash :: Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Cryptkeepers

I was working in the lab late one night,
when my eyes beheld an eerie sight,
for my monster from his slab began to rise,
and suddenly to my surprise…
he did the mash,
he did the monster mash.”

2. I See Monsters :: Ryan Adams

Oh, oh but when she calls,
I know she’s the one,
makes me want her harder,
makes me want to be a little stronger,
still I see monsters.”

3. Monster Hospital :: Metric

“Can you please release me?”

4. Eaten by the Monster of Love :: Sparks

“It’s hard to fight it off much more,
I hear it drooling by the door;
eaten by the monster of love.”

5. I’m a Monster :: Ours

“Turn to the bright to describe what we never will find,
I’m a monster singing through the sigh of a left high.”
