231. Begin Again
Music movies are without a doubt my favorite type of movies, and this one is definitely in my top 5 list of favorite music movies (as well as my top 5 movies of 2014 of all types/genres). I love how music is a character in the movie, and how New York is, as well, and how the connection that music forges is so much of the theme. My favorite moment was definitely the walk through New York with the shared headphones/playlists.
Like a Fool :: Keira Knightley
Brutal and brilliant, the movie is, at its core, the story of an unconventional family. The bond that forges between Leon and Mathilda is deep, familial, vulnerable and heartbreaking. So many phenomenal performances in this film, especially Jean Reno, Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman.
Venus as a Boy :: Bjork
233. Fight Club
Though the first time watching is the most shocking, the film itself gets better to me with every repeated viewing. It is as disturbing as it is thought-provoking, as heartbreaking as it is enlightening, and it is one hell of a mind-bending ride. By far my favorite roles for Brad Pitt, Ed Norton and Helena Bonham Carter – they are all three so incredible in this.
“It’s only after we lose everything that we’re free to do anything.”
A story about friendship, about coming-of-age in the post-teen years, and about finding and being yourself. I love Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Lisa Kudrow), but I also really love both Heather Mooney (Janeane Garofalo) and Sandy Frink (Alan Cumming) – so much. This is a go-to movie for me whenever I feel low, as it is a sure thing to cheer me up.

235. Alice in Wonderland
A favorite of mine for some past personal reasons that revolved around a friendship that eventually went away, but my feelings for the movie remained. Alice’s curiosity, imagination and persistence are the things I related to as a child, and these are the parts of her that I still connect with. The music and the colors and the characters that she meets, especially the Mad Hatter, all add to my love of this movie, and help to make it a favorite.
“The Mad Tea Party”
“All in the golden afternoon”
