Where is my Mind? :: Pixies from the album, Surfer Rosa About the song:  Where Is My Mind? is a song by the band Pixies. It is the 7th track on their 1988 debut album Surfer Rosa. The song was written by frontman Black Francis while he attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, inspired by his experiences while scuba diving in the Caribbean. Black Francis described the scuba experience as “this very small fish trying to chase me. I don’t know why — I don’t know too much about fish behavior.” Although the song was never released as a single, it is one of … Continue reading Try this trick and spin it :: VOTD

Keep Art Alive :: “Deep Sea” :: Art by Sarah Joncas “I’ve kissed mermaids, rode the El Nino, walked the sand with the crustaceans, could find my way to Mariana, on a wave of mutilation.” The waves cut across each side of her, a riptide that took her breath and caused the flashing lights of near gone to dance inside her eyelids. At first she fought against the water, flailing erratically, her mouth open wide enough to silently scream, but instead it was the salt and sea that she was swallowing whole. Her head filled with echoes and a reverberating … Continue reading You think I’m dead but I sail away :: SOTD

New Release Tuesday :: My Top 5 :: September 30, 2014 1. Playland :: Johnny Marr Three-Sentence Review: Addictive and incredibly listenable, Playland has taken me by surprise, exceeding any expectations I had when I pushed play. This album completely trumps and takes over Moz’s disappointing release this year in its musical relevancy and cutting edge feel. The album plays like a fantastic mix of some of my favorite mid-to-late 80’s bands (Love and Rockets, Flesh For Lulu, New Order) and some of the more recent alt-rock bands I’ve loved (Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines, Palma Violets). Initial Favorite Track(s): Easy Money, Dynamo … Continue reading New Release Tuesday :: My Top 5 :: September 30, 2014

Final Girls in Horror :: Top 25 :: 25-21 :: October’s Spooky Monday Movies (well, its ALMOST October)

Final Girl’s in Horror :: Top 25 :: October’s Spooky Monday Movies What is a final girl? Well, according to Carol Clover’s 1992 book Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, argues that although slasher movies seem to delight in the sadistic torment of female victims, they are actually providing the audience a point of identification with the last woman standing, which Clover identified as the “Final Girl.” Since this is the spooky month of October around here I thought I’d give over “Movie Mondays” to celebrate the best of the “Final Girls” in horror. Each Monday in October (yes, … Continue reading Final Girls in Horror :: Top 25 :: 25-21 :: October’s Spooky Monday Movies (well, its ALMOST October)

Zola Jesus :: Now Hear This

Zola Jesus Nika Roza Danilova better known by her stage name Zola Jesus, is an American singer-songwriter. She has released three EPs and three full-length albums, as well as a new album, Taiga, ready to release on October 7 on Mute Records. I cannot wait to hear the new album, especially since David Lynch is one of the co-producers on the album, as well as Sparklehorse. Her music combine electronic, industrial, classical, goth, and experimental rock influences. Go (Blank Sea) is currently on my heavy rotation list, especially when driving home from work in that almost sunset time of day. Nika’s musical … Continue reading Zola Jesus :: Now Hear This

Keep Art Alive :: “All’s Fair in Love & War” :: Art by Sarah Joncas “Come closer and see, see into the trees; find the girl while you can.” Temptation lights another cigarette, you can feel the burn from miles away, pulling you closer, pulling you into the flame. She blinks promises from each eye, a muse of a thousand words, of touch, and feel, and taste. You come with blazing weapons, steely eyes, and all your intentions in check, but it will all be in vain. Cool and collected are her specialty, her fingers curling around your neck, poison … Continue reading Just follow your eyes :: SOTD

My Weekly Top 10 :: Week of 9/22/14

1. The Bangles Maybe its the upcoming concert at the Troubadour that one of my oldest and dearest friends and I are going to this Fall, or maybe its adolescent wish that never quite went away of being in an all-female band (if I could of been a Bangle I always wanted to be Michael Steele). This week I’ve been addicted to their first album, All Over the Place, especially the songs Going Down to Liverpool and More Than Meets the Eye. Going Down to Liverpool :: The Bangles with Leonard Nimoy as their grumpy driver! 2. Pride I wrote a review … Continue reading My Weekly Top 10 :: Week of 9/22/14
