When listening to the first single off of Jenny Lewis’ new album, produced by Ryan Adams, my wish was not only to hear the entire Jenny Lewis’ album, but for Ryan to release something of his own — and soon. The music gods must have been listening to me, as today, lo and behold, Ryan has a new single out, and it matches up to its song title, Gimme Something Good. Released on Ryan’s label, PaxAmericana, this new single reminds me of how much I’ve missed Ryan’s music (now I’m going to be found counting the days until September 9, when his upcoming self-titled album will be released.
Gimme Something Good feels a little 80’s to me, circa Don’t Come Around Here No More Tom Petty, and Big Log by Robert Plant, mixed up with the good graces, rock n’ roll sensibilities, heartache desperation, and play fucking loud wonder that all my favorite Ryan songs are made of. You can hear the influence of producer Glyn Johns, too, who has worked with a variety of artists and bands, include The Steve Miller Band, Humble Pie, Faces, The Who, Eagles, and others.
Gimme Something Good
I can hear Los Angeles in this track, a Los Angeles in the early evening, just after the sun has set and the street lamps and neon lights have turned on. Cars and bars and girls with long brown hair, all of it I can hear in the guitar strums and organ echoes. Push play and let me know what you think.
