MOVIE MONDAY HEADER

191. Joe vs. the Volcano

A journey of self-discovery taken when the worst is expected, when the clanging chimes of mortality are ringing in the distance, or when the mundane and the miserable are just too much to take anymore, whatever fuels it, that rebellious, brave and maybe crazy desire to just go and really live is powerful. Joe experiences it in this surreal story that completely captured me the first time I saw it. This is a movie full of wit, romance, adventure and the magic that plays in our minds in those quiet moments when we allow it.

192. Pride and Prejudice

During my senior year of high school, my favorite literature teacher gave me a long list of books to read for extra credit (that I didn’t need), and to challenge me (which I did need). This was on the list, and it marked my first Austen I ever read, and I was instantly lost in the pages. The film captured me as strongly as the book did back then, and I found myself lost in the cinematic experience.

193. Like Crazy

This movie hurt like hell to watch, but it was so well done, so spot on, so damn heartbreakingly true for anyone who has ever been in a long-distance relationship. The time zone issues, the phone calls, the desperation and sadness when apart, the joy when together, the never-ceasing doubt and the impossibility of it all is captured perfectly here. Wonderful performances, especially by Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin.

194. Who’s That Girl?

If I believed in such things as “guilty pleasures” this would certainly be up there at the top of the list, but I don’t believe in feeling guilty for things I enjoy, and I enjoy the hell out of this movie. It is over the top Madonna from the True Blue era, it is silly and wild and ridiculous, and tells another story of stepping out of the expected, mundane life and into one that is unexpected and full of adventure. And, well, I’m a sucker for a love story, too, even if it is a silly one.

195. Mulholland Drive

Movies about Los Angeles, and movies by David Lynch, are a sure thing for my cinematic heart. Visually stunning, mysterious, visceral, intriguing, beguiling, and in some ways frustrating as I can’t help but find myself wishing it had been a television series as it was originally meant to be (mainly because I want more). When I watch this film I feel lost within it.
