186. Adult World

Movies about writers are a big love of mine, as are coming of age stories, whether reality based stories, or works of fantasy. Amy is a struggling writer, a lost girl looking to sort out who she is in the world, and in many ways she is a blank slate of life experience. Her story, her high points and low, low ones, her embarrassing moments, her triumphant ones, and her persistence were real and raw and inspiring; I was rooting for her and wanting to know more when the credits ran.

187. Drinking Buddies

This movie hit hard and in a very personal way for me on so many levels. This is a very honest look at relationships and friendships, but also it is about finding yourself and knowing yourself, and understanding where you belong. There is no easy answers here, no closure, no “everything is tied up” kind of ending, and I’m okay with that, because that’s how life is, too – even if some days I’d like it to be easy, with closure where its needed, and bows to tie things perfectly together.

188. Cruel Intentions

A unique take on a period piece French novel and a very different remake from the original, more true to the source setting, film which I also love. This one though I adore for its originality, for its characterizations, for the societal questions it raises, especially on the differences between women and men’s sexuality, reputations, and the notions of virginity and promiscuity. It has one hell of a soundtrack, too.

189. About a Boy

Nick Hornby has been lucky with movie adaptations of his books, something that is an exception to the rule most times. This one holds a special place in my heart for very personal reasons, and is filled with a lot of memories. The characters are portrayed perfectly by everyone in this film, and stole my heart as deeply as they did in the book pages.

190. Imagine Me and You

Unexpected love at an unexpected time, this film does have predictability, but there are enough real moments to make it transcend the predictable. Also, Lena Headey gives such a stunning performance (and yes, is so stunning). I love watching the relationships unfold int his, even the ones that break apart; it all leaves behind a feeling of possibilities.

  1. I need to see Adult World. I started Drinking Buddies the other night but started doing…I don’t know what instead but I loved one of the songs and googled it, “Turns Around The Bottle”. Have to finish the movie, love Olivia Wilde and your review makes me want to turn it on right now. Also watched The Lifeguard recently, not sure if you touched on that one yet but I liked it and I think you’d really like it too it’s a controversial storyline, well written, another one with a great song on the soundtrack “Hawthorne to Hennepin” and I cried pretty hard a couple of times but sometimes I need that and those are my kind of movies. Curious to hear what you think about it if you’ve seen it. Nice list.

    1. I love Olivia Wilde, too.

I will have to watch The Lifeguard – I haven’t seen it yet. Have you seen the film Sympathy for Delicious?

I discovered Adult World by accident and loved it. I’d love to know what you think of it when/if you see it.

      1. I just finished it today (watched the first 1/2 during my lunch break yesterday, last 1/2 today)…I do recommend it. It is written/directed by Mark Ruffalo, he’s in it, as is Juliette Lewis, Laura Linney, Orlando Bloom…odd story with interesting twists. Homeless, disabled LA DJ develops the power to heal (but can’t heal himself) and ends up in a rock band…there’s a lot more to it, but it is really interesting/well done. I love a good indie film!!!
