THE WAY, WAY BACK

181. The Way Way Back

I love the unexpected joy of discovering a movie you know nothing about ahead of time and having it be one of those movies that you just get, and that just gets you, and it soon becomes one of your all-time favorites. This has so many things I love in it: unconventional family dynamics, a found “family of choice”, a honest coming-of-age tale, a summer vacation plot, great performances, witty dialogue, well-developed/complex characters, and damn good writing. Also, Sam Rockwell – I love Sam Rockwell.

182. Romeo + Juliet

I have studied, seen, and been involved with an uncountable amount of Shakespeare in my life, and I have my favorite plays, which this is not typically one of. That said, I love this portrayal, the way the language is woven into the story in both obvious and subliminal ways, the rock and roll feel to it (these were teenagers and this was a rebellious tale of love, albeit a tragic one), the imagery and casting and look and feel, the soundtrack and the “Baz Luhrmann” of it all. The movie left an indelible mark on me, and is one of those films that represents a certain time in my life (the 90’s also left quite an indelible mark).

183. Leap Year

I’m a sucker for this particular brand of romantic comedy, which I harken back to It Happened One Night and also to French Kiss (two other favorites in this “sub-genre”), where someone is running to or from something and on the way meets up with someone who they don’t readily fall for, usually argue with, and then (of course) they do fall for each other — and find themselves in the “travelling adventure”, too. It’s predictable, and maybe I like that part of it, too, all I know is that these are movies that make me feel good — and this is one of them. Great cast, too; I love Amy Adams and Matthew Goode in it, as well as a slew of supporting characters in the Ireland portion of the film.

184. Say Anything

Though I have my issues with the Lloyd Dobler character and what I think he represents to my generation, I still have quite a soft spot for him, too (it’s complicated, really it is). Beyond Lloyd, I adore Cory and Diane and the soundtrack and the movie itself and Cameron Crowe films in general, and just about everything this movie is to me (it is iconic to my adolescence and an important movie to me). This is one of a handful of “favorite movies” that I can recite pretty much line-by-line, by memory.

185. A Life Less Ordinary

On the road, on the run, with a karaoke stop along the way, and Ewan McGregor – how could I not love it? Such an amazing cast, especially Ewan, Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo. I am a huge fan of early Danny Boyle films.
