Love Me Again :: John Newman
from the album, Tribute
directed by Vaughan Arnel

Love Me Again is a single by English soul singer and musician John Newman. The song was released as a digital download in Europe on May 17,2013, except for the United Kingdom where it was released on June 30, 2013 as the lead single from his debut studio album, Tribute (2013).

The song was written by Newman and Steve Booker and produced by Booker and Mike Spencer.

John Newman first came to prominence as the featured vocalist on Rudimental’s hit singles Feel The Love and Not Giving In. Love Me Again is his debut solo single.

Newman co-wrote the song with British songwriter Steve Booker, who also co-penned Duffy’s smash hit Mercy, which won the 2009 Ivor Novello Award for most performed work. The pair composed the tune in a small studio in Parsons Green and they immediately sensed there was something special about it.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Newman was asked if he sensed that the song had something special about it in the studio. He said, “Yeah. The guy I wrote it with, we turned around and had massive grins on our faces thinking, ‘There’s something good here’. But you just never know how good it is, you know?“.

Newman was also asked if it was hard to write the lyrics about love and break-up, he said, “No, it’s the only place where I really open up to somebody, through my music. I’m producing [the album] and writing it, it’s good. I like to keep a hold of everything“.

Newman explained to MTV UK that the song finds him expressing his heart and soul to an ex. He explained: “I kinda really messed up with my ex-girlfriend and she was working down in Dorset for a bit so I jumped on a train went and surprised her and kind of just turned up at her work.” He went on to explain that he asked her to love him again, which became the title and basis of the song.

Newman wrote the lyrics on the train home.

The song is in F major mixolydian.

Two music videos, both with elements of Northern soul dancing, have been released for Love Me Again. One version (see above) directed by Vaughan Arnell is based on the classic love story of Romeo and Juliet. Another version features John Newman, backed by musicians, singing in a dimly lit room.

Editor’s Note: There is something so exuberant, so pulse-racing and so danceable about Northern Soul songs. I watched John Newman perform this live on the Jimmy Fallon show today whilst having lunch and I was blown away by the performance. The song is now this afternoon’s ear-worm, making  me want to dance around my office.
