Keep Art Alive :: The 10 Questions Project :: Featuring Jill & Haven of Wing & Hollow

1. What music (or other art form) inspires you when you create your art?

Jill: Music, film, travel and the people close to me are some of my biggest inspirations for melodies and lyrics.  From a young age I’ve been drawn to all things vintage, such as old movies and music from the last century, specifically classic jazz, 60’s era folk-rock and music theater.

Haven: Seeing live music performances helps rattle things up for me and travel also does it. I know that’s a bit off, but being in airports amongst strangers in random places across the country lends to my thinking of new ideas. The Art of Transportation.

2. Long distance road trip: what three people do you invite along (fictional or non-fictional, dead or alive)?

1st would be Haven, my Husband and musical collaborator.
2nd- Paul McCartney, my biggest idol! did I mention I love him?!
3rd- Ernest Hemingway- he’d be GREAT to travel with, as well as enjoy libations with…

Bill Murray
Jimmy Page
George Orwell

3. What is your favorite breakfast cereal?

Jill: Cereal is not my thing, I’m more of a fruit and nuts breakfast kind of person.

Haven: I’m an oatmeal kind of fella.

4. What is one thing that is hanging on your bedroom wall?

Jill: A watercolor painting of MonteMartre in Paris, France. My favorite place.

Haven: A quote by Charlie Daniels:
Stay true to your music, never chase fad, honor a handshake and never look at the empty seats.”

5. What smell/scent evokes strong memories for you?

Jill: I’m going to go with coffee.  I wake up every morning smelling (or dreaming of) coffee.

Haven: Love this question. Scent memory is a pretty boss thing! I’d have to say A BBQ. It evokes an idea that all is well and little less serious.

6. Coffee or tea?

Haven: Coffee and lots of it.

7. What has been the most impactful compliment, or criticism, you have ever received?

Jill: something like, “You haven’t even begun to imagine your potential, so keep going.”

Haven: While on the road and things were pretty rough I was told “Don’t like the way things look? Then you need to practice harder” which was a sound piece of criticism that worked its way into something I applied. Make things the way you want by practice and hard work.

8. Three words that describe you?

Jill: imaginative, determined, thoughtful.

Haven: Dark and Stormy. I don’t know…

(Editor’s note: “Dark and Stormy” is three words…)

9. What is/was your cartoon character crush?

Jill: I always had big crushes on movie characters growing up (example: Lloyd Dobler, Indiana Jones…etc), but if I had to chose a cartoon, I’m going to go with Ariel from “Little Mermaid.”  She has that amazing hair and swims all day and I used to dance around and sing all of her Mermaid songs when I was little (sometimes I still do).

Haven: Wilma Flintstone.

10. The world is ending in ten minutes and you get to listen to one, and only one, song: Which song?

Jill: “A Case of You,” sung by Diana Krall on her Live in Paris album from 2002.  It absolutely crushes me with its beauty and sadness and always has.

Haven: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Six minutes of music with four minutes left to think about how amazing Freddie Mercury was.

A Case of You (live) :: Diana Krall

Editor’s note: from 2001, but it is live in Paris – closest I could find.

Bohemian Rhapsody (live) :: Queen

Editor’s note: live version because…wow.
