Friday Five :: She opened up her heart and let me in

Willing to Wait :: Sebadoh Friday Five 5 Things this song reminds me of: 1. That one unrequited, never quite got there, “what if” relationship that never really goes away. It was a case of bad timing, of insurmountable insecurities, and not figuring it all out soon enough that we both felt the same. Makes for good writing, they say – that kind of unfinished love – but I think I would have preferred to have had a start, a middle, and an end. 2. That week in Las Vegas, in the Summer of ’96. Time meant nothing after awhile. … Continue reading Friday Five :: She opened up her heart and let me in

Take everything :: songs and poetry

Leaving Is Just the Start of Letting Go  (by me) There are these awkward turns of the page that mark our hands with paper cut reminders that this almost did not exist at all that in more ways than we care to admit we had moved on with this thing we coin a life with new characters and episode titles the lead roles played by stand-in actors though I think they all tried to play that nothing across the screen had changed It all seemed to fall into place making perfect sense to the untrained eye but up close the … Continue reading Take everything :: songs and poetry

Coffee and TV :: As Heard on TV

Music and television can sometimes be very delightful bed fellows when the right mix of a song on a soundtrack, and  a cinematic scene connect and click and move the viewer. Often, though, shows will use a song to force a mood or emotion on the viewer, which ends up feeling too heavy handed and manipulative to me. Or, another televised musical failing to me, is when a show includes too many songs in an obvious attempt to promote the network/companies musical artists via their other properties. I love well done music videos, as this space will attest, but when … Continue reading Coffee and TV :: As Heard on TV

The 80’s :: Time is on your side

“Young hearts be free tonight. time is on your side, Don’t let them put you down, don’t let em push you around, Don’t let em ever change your point of view.” History Lesson: Young Turks (sometimes incorrectly called Young Hearts) is a song by Rod Stewart that first appeared on his album Tonight I’m Yours. The term “Young Turk” is slang for a rebellious youth who acts contrary to what is deemed normal by society.  After bowing at No. 61 on 17 October 1981, the song peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 in December of 1981 – January 1982. The song also peaked at No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart and at No. 3 … Continue reading The 80’s :: Time is on your side

Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe :: Okkervil River “It’s just a house burning, but it’s not haunted. It was your heart hurting, but not for long, kid. From the speakers your fake masterpiece is serenely dribbling. When the air around your chair fills with heat, that’s the flames licking. Beneath the clock on the clean mantelpiece. It’s got a calm clicking, like a pro at this editing suite takes two weeks stitching up some bad movie.” Continue reading No dissolve to a sliver of grey :: video of the day

Well I’ve been here before sat on the floor in a grey, grey room :: musical sensory recall

“Have I still got you to be my open door? Have I still got you to be my sandy shore? Have I still got yo to cross my bridge in the storm? Have I still got you to keep me warm?” There are brief moments that touch our lives, and people who appear for a short time and connect with us, that change the ways and hows and constructs of who we are. Perhaps we do not realize it at the time. The days are so muddied up with places to go and be, and the anxious circles of nonsense … Continue reading Well I’ve been here before sat on the floor in a grey, grey room :: musical sensory recall
