Record Store Day :: April 20, 2013

Record Store Day :: Saturday, April 20 Find your local participating store here I spent many years working in record stores, as a clerk, a manager and a buyer, and always as a music lover. My years working at record stores I was admittedly not paid well, but I honestly have never had a job(s) that I loved as much as I did working in record stores. Being surrounded by music all day long, shelving it, discovering it, talking about it, learning about it, and just being in it as a job was beyond fantastic. Sure, there were days of … Continue reading Record Store Day :: April 20, 2013

Take me now baby here as I am :: FLTS (a Wednesday edition)

Because the Night :: Garbage and Screaming Females “Have I doubt when I’m alone,  love is a ring, the telephone. Love is an angel disguised as lust, here in our bed until the morning comes.” Because I love Patti Smith and Shirley Manson, because I love cover songs done right, and because I love kick ass women musicians – well, those are a few reasons why I find this cover version of Because the Night so fucking fantastic. Who says I can only have a FLTS on Friday? Tonight this is my FLTS Wednesday… Fucking love this song Continue reading Take me now baby here as I am :: FLTS (a Wednesday edition)

It’s midnight at the Starlite Diner :: songs and contemplations

“Have you ever slept it off to the bones, and woken up at night, my love, having dreamt you called them all, every person you could never love?” Awoke in the middle of the night, the air stale from another California April which feels more akin to some late Summer night, and my head felt full of distorted half-dreamt images. They say in the dreamscapes of your mind all the struggles you try to deny and repress surface, playing out on the inside of closed eyelids on a flickering screen. But, most nights the faces have changed, even mine, and … Continue reading It’s midnight at the Starlite Diner :: songs and contemplations

Put ’em on me :: musical sensory recall

“I want you,  call me to you, I wanna move, will you? I really wanna feel you.” Late nights, back alleys, unidentified side streets and non-marked buildings, the smell of clove cigarettes, smeared kohl eyeliner, black fishnet stockings, and all that music. This song reminds me of clubs in Hollywood in the very late ’80’s, and dancing. So much dancing. There are other memories attached to this song, and that time; other feelings, reminders, faces, kisses, hands, touches. But, listening to it today, dancing is what I remember the most. I Want Your Hands On Me :: Sinead O’Connor and … Continue reading Put ’em on me :: musical sensory recall

Dawes :: Stories Don’t End :: New Music Review

Dawes :: Stories Don’t End Stories Don’t End is a bit of a slow burn of an album for me. At first listen I felt a let down, most probably because Dawes’ last album, Nothing Is Wrong, means so very much to me. On my first initial listens I did not feel that immediate connection that I did before, and I found myself drifting off into thought, instead of honing in on the lyrics, and the stories in the songs. For an album that speaks of stories not ending I felt almost like my feelings for Dawes might be ending, … Continue reading Dawes :: Stories Don’t End :: New Music Review

Smoke all my cigarettes again :: video of the day

Like a Friend :: Pulp “You are the last drink I never should have drunk. You are the body hidden in the trunk. You are the habit I can’t seem to kick. You are my secrets on the front page every week. You are the car I never should have bought. You are the train I never should have caught. You are the cut that makes me hide my face. You are the party that makes me feel my age. Like a car crash I can see, but I just can’t avoid. Like a plane, I’ve been told I never … Continue reading Smoke all my cigarettes again :: video of the day

I’ve got some real estate here in my bag :: song of the day

“I’m lost, I said, though I knew she was sleeping, I’m empty and aching, and I don’t know why.” This is one of those songs that I remember vividly from my childhood, and yet, despite those long ago memories, I have new ones, as well. I have carried this song along with me and redefined it, over and again. The sign of an amazing song, at least to me, is one that transcends time and place, or even what the songwriter meant it to mean; a song that becomes something personal and self-referential, and permanent to one’s own life soundtrack. … Continue reading I’ve got some real estate here in my bag :: song of the day
