Keep Art Alive :: “Stargazing Antiquity” :: Art by Jeaneen Carlino
Keep Art Alive :: The 10 Questions Project :: Featuring Jeaneen Carlino
1. What music (or other art form) inspires you when you create your art?
Depending on my mood, I enjoy listening to electronic-like sounds. Artists like Santigold, Bat for Lashes, Lykke Li, M.I.A. & Feist are musicians I enjoy creating to. But, when I’m in a thinking mood, which seems to be more often these days, I love listening to interviews by inspiring people of all creative & spiritual backgrounds.
2. Long distance road trip: what three people do you invite along (fictional or non-fictional, dead or alive)?
Joseph Campbell (mythologist & author), David Lynch (visionary genius & meditator) and Buffy Sainte-Marie (native american folk singer, artist & activist).
3. What is your favorite breakfast cereal?
Steel-cut Oats with a little maple syrup, dried cranberries & almonds. A great way to get your fiber & protein nutrients.
4. What is one thing that is hanging on your bedroom wall?
A beautiful, vibrant painting of women dancing on decorative patterned drums, created by an unknown Eastern Indian artist(s). I get lost in all the colors and designs when I’m drinking coffee in the morning to bring in the day with.
5. What smell/scent evokes strong memories for you?
The aromas of breakfast cooking reminds me of Saturday mornings, when my dad would cook for us growing up. It gives me that warm and fuzzy nostalgic feeling.
6. Coffee or tea?
Medium Roast Coffee with a splash of soy creamer & a hint of sugar.
7. What has been the most impactful compliment, or criticism, you have ever received?
In art school, I had a very trained eye with drawing. I became very learned in different styles of drawing and started to lose a sense of my own vision. Two of my teachers pulled me aside one day to give me a personal critique of my work and they told me to unlearn these drawing styles. This was the best piece of advice I could have received, because it allowed me to really tap into creating work that was honest to me, rather then trying to impress others with technique.
8. Three words that describe you?
Spiritual – Loyal – Inquisitive
9. What is/was your cartoon character crush?
Rafiki, the mandrill monkey from Lion King. I loved his shamanistic, wise & playful qualities. Plus, I loved collecting all things monkeys & apes as a child.
10. The world is ending in ten minutes and you get to listen to one, and only one, song: Which song?
Summer Madness by Kool & the Gang
Summer Madness :: Kook and the Gang
