The 80’s :: When it all comes down

Cause I don’t want to come back down from this cloud,
it’s taken me all this time to find out what I need.”

History Lesson:  Comedown is a single by British rock band Bush from their first album Sixteen Stone. It was released as the third single from the album in 1995. “Comedown” became one of the band’s most popular songs reaching number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and number two on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in late 1995. The song also gave Bush their first American top 40 hit, reaching number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 4, 1995.

Lead singer Gavin Rossdale has claimed that he wrote Comedown about his ex-girlfriend, Suze DiMarchi. She was lead singer of a band called Baby Animals.

Rossdale had written songs with other people, but this was the first one he wrote on his own. It gave him a lot of confidence and inspired him to keep writing. Rossdale said of this song: “It was written in the context of half regret, half celebration and just being objective about the situation of coming down from that high and dealing with those intense emotions.”

Personal Reflection:  Sometimes I think I enjoy the music from the ’90’s better now than I did back in the ’90’s, or perhaps my tastes have veered in different directions since then (or, as it seems, in various directions).

I remember this song as a background song, a soundtrack playing while I hungout with certain friends, or drove around Los Angeles with the radio on. I do not have any particular image, or memory, that comes to mind from those days when I hear this song. What I do have, though, is a newfound love of the song, and the lyrics, now.

It was recent that I heard the song again, and something about the lyrics (especially the quoted chorus above) that struck a chord with me. I have gotten to a time, or an age, or a chapter in my life where I really know myself and what I want in this life – and for once I feel very happy with the person I am, and the people I have chosen to have in my life. I guess, it just took a long time to get here, and this song strikes at that in some ways.
