Down By the Water :: PJ Harvey

Haunting and raw sexuality, this video is overflowing with it. There is something David Lynch like in the imagery, the color pallete, and the sound of the song. I find myself filling in the blanks of character and story, writing the protagonist, and the love gone wrong, and the secrets left by the shore.

The revenge of the mermaid, made human by a trick of love and seduction, setting her daughter free by giving her back to the ocean waves, that is the story I see beyond the scenes here. What may have happened to the mermaid after the prince took her, had her and tried to turn her away.
