Going back to the 60’s. Back to before I was born. My mother’s all-time favorite band was The Beatles. I think I’ve been listening to their music since I was in utero. My all-time favorite Beatles album is Rubber Soul. Oh, and my all-time favorite Beatle? That would be George Harrison.
The Beatles – Rubber Soul (1965)
My Top 5 Favorite Songs – September 27, 2011
I cannot count how many times I’ve listened to this record. I used to steal my mother’s copy and take it into my room, playing it over and over until I learned all the lyrics to all the songs. My favorite has always been “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”, though it wouldn’t be until I was a late teen that I’d realize the song is about a one-night stand. As a kid I just liked the idea of sleeping in the bath.
When I moved out on my own for the first time I took that copy of Rubber Soul that I used to steal and take into my room. Yes, this time I stole it and took it out of the house, and with me. I still have it. My oldest daughter jokes that when she moves out on her own she’s going to carry on the tradition and steal it, taking it out of the house, and with her.
I hope she does.
My Top 5 Songs from The Beatles – Rubber Soul (1965)
Song 1: “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”
“She told me she worked in the morning,
and started to laugh,
I told her I didn’t.
and crawled off to sleep in the bath.”
Song 2: “I’m Looking Through You”
“You don’t sound different,
I’ve learned the game.
I’m looking through you,
you’re not the same.”
Song 3: “In My Life”
“But of all these friends and lovers,
there is no one compares with you.
And these memories lose their meaning,
when I think of love as something new.”
Song 4: “You Won’t See Me”
“Time after time,
you refuse to even listen.
I wouldn’t mind,
if I knew what I was missing.”
Song 5: “Nowhere Man”
“Doesn’t have a point of view,
knows not where he’s going to.
Isn’t he a bit like you and me?”
