Its Wednesday, my favorite “school night” day of the week and today’s Top 5 Music Obsessions run the gamut of dance-infused enthusiasm and mellow musicality. There are some new discoveries among the 5, along with an old favorite, and a Track from one of my Favorite Albums from last year. Are you ready to give it a go?
Track 1 is a Music discovery off of the Netflix Series Lovesick that I’ve been binging and raving about. Glass Candy is full of 80’s electro-pop/new wave sensibilities that remind me of CHROMATICS and also of the Soundtrack to the Film Drive. Next up is Nia Wyn, a singer I discovered today via Paul Weller (it is Weller Wednesday, after all). The Modfather is currently in the studio working on a collaboration with Nia, so I thought I’d do some digging into her sound. I dig the “Northern Soul” referencing in this catchy Tune. One of my all-time Favorite male Singers, Bryan Ferry, and his Song “Kiss and Tell” is Song #3. I woke up this morning with this one in my head, and have been humming it ever since. It reminds me of books I devoured in the early 90’s by Bret Easton Ellis, Tama Janowitz, and Jay Jay McInerney (I think this Track may have been part of the Soundtrack to McInerney’s book made into a movie, Bright Lights, Big City). Slowdive’s “Slomo” comes off of Slowdive’s 2017 Album that I love so much. It follows Ferry so perfectly, bringing down the mood of the mix in the best way. Last, but not least, is another new discovery from Spotify’s weekly “Discover Weekly” Playlist – its really a brilliant one this week!
